Why Do We Experience Morning Stiffness and How Can We Alleviate It?

Morning Stiffness and Aches

Feeling stiff and achy in the mornings is a common complaint, and it’s often attributed to factors like aging or the presence of chronic conditions such as arthritis. However, understanding the root causes and implementing strategies to mitigate these symptoms can make a significant difference in how you start your day.

For instance, back pain is incredibly prevalent, with estimates suggesting that “eighty percent of all people will experience back pain at some point.” Fortunately, 80% of those will find relief through common-sense remedies. Factors such as an unhealthy lifestyle, including smoking, a poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, a sedentary behavior, stress, and weight gain, can contribute to persistent inflammation, leading to symptoms like redness, pain, warmth, and swelling. Addressing these lifestyle factors is crucial for managing chronic inflammation, which can severely impact joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.

The immune system’s response to viral infections, such as the flu, can also result in muscle and joint aches. This is due to the body’s efforts to fight the infection, potentially leading to muscle inflammation and weakness, or myositis, and pain referred to as myalgia or arthralgia. Moreover, pain may intensify at night due to hormonal fluctuations; specifically, the anti-inflammatory hormone cortisol dips to its lowest levels.

Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS) is another condition that can cause severe and widespread pain. Episodes can be intermittent or constant, potentially affecting the entire body or localized to a single area.

To counteract morning stiffness, a gentle back stretch is recommended: “Stand up straight with your feet slightly apart. Place your hands on your lower back with your fingertips pointing down. As you inhale, roll your shoulders back and gently lift your chest toward the ceiling, arching your back to the point of comfort. You should be gazing up at the ceiling in front of you. (Be careful not to overextend your neck.)”

When considering the array of symptoms and causes of body aches, it is evident that the strategies for relief are equally diverse, ranging from lifestyle adjustments to specific physical therapies. It is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a tailored approach to managing pain and stiffness.
