Understanding Yeast Infections: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Yeast infections are caused by a fungus known as candida, which is typically found in small numbers in the vagina. A healthy balance of bacteria and yeast is crucial; however, certain factors can disrupt this balance, leading to an overgrowth of yeast. Some common triggers include specific types of antibiotics, an altered vaginal pH, unmanaged diabetes, and a weakened immune system.

Antibiotics, particularly broad-spectrum ones, can cause yeast infections by killing not only harmful bacteria but also the beneficial bacteria that prevent yeast overgrowth. Diabetes contributes to yeast infections as high sugar levels can feed yeast, aiding its growth. Moreover, anything that changes the typical acidic pH of a healthy vagina, such as menstruation, can affect the number of yeast cells.

While uncomfortable, vaginal yeast infections rarely lead to serious health issues. They often resolve on their own, especially with the onset of menstruation, which lowers the pH. It’s worth noting that 75% of women will experience at least one yeast infection during their lifetime, with up to 45% experiencing multiple instances.

In contrast, urinary tract infections (UTIs) are usually caused by E. coli bacteria from the intestinal system. These infections are different from yeast infections and have distinct risk factors and symptoms.

To maintain a healthy vaginal environment and prevent yeast infections, it’s advised to manage diabetes effectively, avoid excessive use of douches and other feminine products, and wear breathable, loose-fitting clothing.
