Understanding the Differences Between UTIs and Yeast Infections

Yeast infections and Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are common conditions that many people experience. Although they may seem similar, they are caused by different factors and require distinct treatments. Understanding these differences is key to effective management and relief.

Common symptoms of a yeast infection include a burning and itching sensation in the vagina and vulva, and a burning sensation while urinating or during intercourse. The discharge associated with yeast infections is typically thick and white, resembling cottage cheese. In contrast, watery vaginal discharge can also be a symptom. To treat yeast infections, over-the-counter anti-fungal medications are usually effective, and treatment typically lasts from three to seven days.

A vaginal yeast infection is a fungal issue, causing irritation, discharge, and intense itchiness of the vagina and vulva. Symptoms can range from mild to moderate, including itching, irritation, and a burning sensation, particularly during intercourse or while urinating. Vaginitis, which can be caused by bacteria, yeast, viruses, or chemicals, leads to inflammation of the vagina’s walls. Its symptoms can include pain, itching, burning, sores, and vaginal fluid discharge. Treatment often involves specific medications.

Yeast infections, generally not sexually transmitted, can cause inflammation, intense itchiness, and a thick white discharge from the vagina. Pain or burning sensations during urination or sex are also common. The healthy vaginal pH typically inhibits yeast growth, but imbalances can lead to infection. Yeast infections are typically treated with vaginal creams or suppositories, available over the counter without a prescription.
