Systemic lupus erythematosus, commonly known as lupus, is an autoimmune disease characterized by episodes of inflammation and damage to various parts of the body, including the skin and organs. The condition arises from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Symptoms typically include a rash, fever, joint inflammation, and sensitivity to the sun.

Lupus affects the body’s immune system, leading it to attack its own tissues. This results in inflammation and tissue damage that can impact multiple body parts, such as the joints, skin, kidneys, nervous system, heart, lungs, and digestive system. The direct causes of lupus are complex and not entirely understood, but it is believed that environmental factors like UV light exposure, infections, stress, or smoking, in combination with specific genetic predispositions, can trigger the disease. Pregnancy is also known to be a common trigger, especially in women of childbearing age.

One particularly challenging form of lupus is CNS lupus, which impacts the central nervous system. Unlike more common forms of lupus, CNS lupus extends beyond the brain and spinal cord, affecting other parts of the body and potentially causing symptoms such as confusion and cognitive issues.

Lupus is a chronic condition with symptoms that tend to fluctuate between periods of flares and remissions. While there is no cure, various treatments are available to manage the symptoms and reduce inflammation.
