Itching with no apparent cause can be a perplexing and uncomfortable experience. Research suggests that immune system irregularities could be a key factor. A study by the Center for the Study of Itch at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis has uncovered immune system defects in patients with unexplained itching.

Generalized itching has various potential triggers, including aging. As Dr. Arndt from Harvard Health explains, “The skin barrier doesn’t work as well as it used to, and things that may not have irritated you before may now be absorbed in the skin and cause itching.” The skin’s impaired immune response, reduced fat and blood flow, and other changes can contribute to this condition. Hormonal changes during menopause and pregnancy can also lead to skin dryness and itching, often intensifying at night.

Certain medications, such as antibiotics, blood pressure pills, opioids, and diuretics, along with skin care products like soaps, deodorants, or bug repellents, are also known to cause itching. In rare cases, nighttime itching could indicate a more serious condition.

Insect and non-insect causes, such as the sensation of bugs, worms, or mites crawling over the skin, can also lead to itching. This sensation, often without any visible bugs, can cause significant distress and lead to exterminator calls. Static electricity can exacerbate this sensation, making body hair move and giving the impression of something crawling over the skin.

Dermatomyositis, a condition discussed by Dr. Harp, can lead to skin changes like scalp rash and heliotrope rash on the eyelids, both with a distinctive purple hue and associated with swelling. Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is characterized by an itchy, scaly rash, usually caused by hypersensitive skin. Psoriasis is another condition that leads to a red, irritated rash with silvery-white patches, commonly found on the scalp and other body parts.
